Congratulations
To Miss Lisa Dillon, ABSL 20th Mitcham
and
David Woolsey ACSL 4th Morden
who had their warrants approved by
the Appointments Committee in January. Please amend your new directories.
Census
A sincere thanks to all Groups for the speedy return of the Census forms, this has enabled us to complete the census nearly 2 weeks ahead of schedule. Full details of the census figures are in the centre of this Free-Flow.
Now the bad news, requests for payment should have arrived with GSLs/Group contacts by now. Please do not make any deductions from the amount requested, these figures are based on the returns given and have been submitted to Scout Headquarters, it is now too late to make any changes.
Safety Co-ordinator
As defined in POR Chapter 3, the District are pleased to announce that Dave Christmas (3rd Mitcham) has been appointed as District Safety Co-Ordinator (DSCo).
The job description includes:
Raising awareness of safety within the District
Working with Groups to promote safer Scouting
Carrying out Audits of safety systems and premises
Helping leaders to carry out risk assessments
To be involved in the Training of Adults
Dave was a Health and Safety Officer in Industry for 10 years and also in an office environment for some 5 years. He is there to help and advise and give support where needed in rectifying and solving safety related problems within the District.
District Directory
Bernie Pike has now completed the District Directory and has e-mailed a copy to Group contacts. If you have any amendments, please contact Lesley Bixby and they will be printed in Free-Flow.
National Trust Fayre
|
There are only a few sessions available for Groups who want to help out at the Children's Corner. This is easy money and everyone who helps gets a free ticket into the Fayre. If your Group has not already booked a session, or feels it can do more than one, contact John Tweedley of the 3rd Mitcham as soon as possible. |

Quiz Night
15th March 2003
at 7.45pm for 8pm start £2 a head - teams of 4 - 6 people Tea and coffee provided but feel free to bring your own drinks Further information from Andrew Hayward |
St George's Chapel, Windsor Appeal
We have been asked to supply the names of past Kings and Queens Scouts to HQ so that they can write to them about this appeal.
It would appear that there is no Roll of Honour in the District and the GSLs felt it would be a good thing if one were compiled. If you got this award, or you know people who did, please send the details to Laurence Barham.
New Merton Street Map
There is a very clear street map of Merton available which may be useful as a training resource. Copies can be obtained from the Press Office at press@merton.gov.uk

Beavers - Evelyn Steele |
Fifteen Leaders attended the dinner at the Little Bay Restaurant in South Croydon - we all had an excellent meal in very good company - thank you Margaret for recommending the venue.
I advised the Leaders who attended the meal that I am cancelling the Bronze Challenge Day booked for 23 March - you should have received a letter from me giving the reasons why I have done this (in consultation with Andy.) Please try and attend the next Meeting on 26 March 2003 at DHQ at 8 p.m. to discuss this further and decide what kind of day we run in October.
Please remember to let me have copies of any qualifications you may have attained, copies of any recent programmes and information on First Aid qualifications you may have.

Cubs - Will Smith |
Since the last Free Flow report the Cub section has been busy. We've held our Handicraft Competition which was attended by 7 teams. The Cubs were challenged to make 4 x wellie pullers, 4 x windsocks from specific items and one windmill out of junk craft. Congratulations to the victors from the 36th Mitcham and also to the 6/12th for second place and particular thanks to Colin Pullen for all his work prior to the event.
We've also had our Communicator's badge day at the County Base. 113 cubs gained their badges by learning about subjects such as memorising a message, telling a story, Makaton and Braille, mobile phones, fax machines, e-mail, letter writing, phonetic alphabet, a foreign language, ship's flags, and Morse code as well as a most entertaining 'making a video' base.
The packs have been busy over the past few months with activities which have included t-shirt designing, a beach party, foot painting, crazy golf course, sailing, camps, a sleepover, an end of jubilee banquet, as well as lots of fund raising events, Christmas parties and badge work - the safety and emergency aid themes have featured strongly.
Dates for the future: 29th March = Leaders' Skills Day at Walton Firs.

Scouts - Paul Atkins |
We had a superb entry of 13 teams for the annual Handball Competition at the end of January which for the first time was held on a Sunday rather than the traditional Saturday. Congratulations to Andy who created an order of play that accommodated the awkward number of teams playing in leagues and whittling them down to semi-finals and then the grand final contested by the 8th Morden & 20th Mitcham with the 8th taking home the enormous trophy. Congratulations to them and thanks to Richard Mainwaring and his team of referees for keeping the games moving. It was nice to see that all games were played in good spirit without the thuggery that has been witnessed at times in the past.
Plans are well under way for the
Incident Hike which will be held on Sunday 9th March at Ranmore
Common. Please ensure that Andy has your entry form and fee by 22nd
February. All Troops entering are required to run a base and Andy
needs to know what you plan to do so that he can co-ordinate them.
Full details of the event are on the web site.
Congratulations to the two teams from the 1st Morden who completed their Chief Scout's Challenge report-back shortly before Christmas. A lot of effort had gone into arranging the expeditions so well done to everybody involved.
Our next Scouters meeting is on
Wednesday 26th March at the 8th's HQ

Explorers - Peter Treagust |
The official launch of Explorer Section in Wandle District has arrived. Unfortunately, only one unit is operational - at the 1st Morden, on Wednesday evenings. The unit planned for the Mitcham area cannot become operational until we have Leaders to run it. Anyone interested in becoming involved with the leadership of the Mitcham unit, or wishing to help out at the Morden Unit, should contact me. As an interim arrangement for scouts in the Mitcham area of Explorer age I intend to arrange transport facilities so that they can attend the 1st Morden unit. I stress this is only a temporary arrangement. The Unit at 1st Morden has a programme up and running and is being enthusiastically led.

Network - Chris Vickers & Simon Mainwaring |
We are currently setting up the Network in the area. This Section is for 18-25 year olds and is run by its members; this means you can basically do want you want when you want! The only limit is your imagination! There are no traditions - we are NEW!
If you are in the 18-25 age bracket, then please come to a meeting at the 16th Morden's HQ on 10th February at 7.45pm We hope to finalise what is happening in this area and the County Scout Network Advisor will be attending this. The meeting should iron out any issues and answer any questions you may have about Network Scouting.
Congratulations to Chris Vickers, Simon Mainwaring and Anthony Ginty on becoming the first fully invested Network Scouts in the District.
