Congratulations

. . . to Val Mills and Evelyn Steele who have both been awarded the Medal of Merit for "outstanding services to Scouting".

Congratulations also

. . . to our District Commissioner, Laurence, and Kay who are getting married this August.

They will be away from 15 August for 3 weeks so please contact appropriate ADCs during that period if you have any problems.

New address

Please note that from 12th July (all being well!), Laurence and Kay are moving. Their new address and phone number can be obtained from Laurence

District Store

The Store will be closed throughout the summer holidays, reopening on 12th September.  Please phone Brian or Mary if you need anything during that period. Their phone numbers are available on request from Wandle Scouts

The Store has a limited stock of resources for the old scheme which are being sold for approx 1/3 of the original price.

For Example:

Beaver certificates

£0.70

Cub certificates

£0.70

Cub Scout Handbooks

£1.50

CSL's Handbook

£0.70

PL's Handbook

£1.50

SL's Handbook

£1.50

Scout Record book

£0.70

A full list can be obtained from Bernie Pike or Brian Whalebone.

DHQ bookings

All bookings for the District Headquarters should be made through Betty Cronk.  However, Bill and Betty moved earlier this year so please make sure you have their new address and phone number which are available from Wandle Scouts

District Sports

Well done to Val Mills and her team of helpers for organising another successful Sports Day.
Hillcross School was a very different venue to Rowan, and in some ways not ideal - we dug several 6" nails out of the sand pit before the long jump could start and there were a number of pot holes on the field providing a potential hazard for the participants.  However, the sun shone and the helpers all made sure that the Cubs and Scouts had a good time.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success.

St George's Flags

So the World Cup is finally over.
Have you or your friends and neighbours got any St George's flags which are no longer required?  If so, could you bring them down to the DHQ so that we can use them as decorations at the St George's Day Service?  Thank you.

Scouts - Paul Atkins

The Patrol Camping weekend at Bears Wood proved to be a worthwhile experience for the eight teams who entered from five of our Troops.

With not a single drop of rain over the weekend everybody was able to enjoy the camp without the traditional hiding under shelters.

All teams achieved a Camping Standard and the 6/12th Mitcham Kingfishers, 8th Morden Foxes, 11th Mitcham Platypusses and 23rd Mitcham Speedies gained Bronze while the 1st Morden Foxes, 6/12th Mitcham Beavers, 8th Morden Kestrels and 11th Mitcham Mongooses were awarded Silver.

The Patrol scoring highest overall were the 1st Morden Foxes who took the Camping Competition Trophy back to Central Road for the second year running.

Competition was fierce in the Camp Cooking to the extent that three teams tied for first place so a third of a trophy goes to the 1st Morden Foxes, 6/12th Mitcham Beavers and the 11th Mitcham Mongooses. Full results are available here.

All of the Scouts present were a credit to their Troops, displaying great enthusiasm and a positive attitude throughout the event.
Thanks to the judging and catering team who gave up their weekend to run the camp.
All Troops, whether they attended our District event or not, are welcome to enter the County Camping Weekend on 21st/22nd September.

The section diary for 2003 was agreed at the end of June and will be circulated in the next few weeks.

At June's Scouters' meeting all of the Troops represented indicated that they intend to begin running with the new balanced programme from September. This will mean that all members will be entitled to new badges right from the start of the term so please advise Mary White of your requirements as soon as possible.

Fellowship - Bill Vaudrey

Recent Events:

Summer Meal - Saturday 8th June - very successful evening with a good number of members attending.

Forthcoming Events:

Golden Jubilee BBQ - Saturday 20th July - DHQ - 7 for 7.30 p.m.  Remember to come in Red, White and Blue.  Tickets £4.00 a head, please let Bill know how many you require.  We hope to lay on a full evening's entertainment.  Don't forget to bring your favourite tipple!

Notes for your Diary

Sunday 8th September - London Walk - details from John Smith.

Wednesday, 25th September - formal evening meeting - DHQ.

Sea Smart Art Competition

I think most Groups will have received copies of the postcards for this free Cub Scout competition, but, in case you didn't, one is enclosed with this month's paper version of Free-Flow.  Your Cubs' design for a sandcastle can win the Pack free entry to one of Sea Life's Centres and a visit to a Coastguard.

Bridge House Estates Trust

Fast approaching - your last chance to apply to the Bridge House Trust (0207 3323710). Tim (0208 685 1771) from Merton Voluntary Service Council has offered help to fill in forms.

Recycled Print Cartridges and Mobile Phones
EuroSource Europe Ltd. is running a scheme to recycle print cartridges and mobile phones. A Welcome Pack is available either via their web site www.scoutsappeal.com or by phone 08451 302010.

Accounts

Please remember that copies of your audited Group accounts (that includes all the Section accounts) must be sent to the District Treasurer, Jean Prior, by the end of July.

Jean's address is available from Wandle Scouts.

Balanced Programmes

From what I hear around the District, most Section Leaders  are planning to spend much of August poring over record books, transferring their members on to the new scheme.  Don't forget that in addition to the new resources, help can be obtained from the Scoutbase website and direct from Gilwell.

Have you let Mary have your initial badge order (or best guess) yet?  She has ordered well over £1000 of the new badges but inevitably, the one YOU want won't be in stock in September.

Brian and Bernie are laying in a stock of the new books and certificates so we hope that the Store will be well prepared for the onslaught in the autumn.

Summer Camps and Holidays

To everyone who is away this summer - whether you are at camp, Pack Holiday, Beaver sleep over or family holiday - we wish you good luck, good fun and good weather.

September Free-Flow

Although the District Store will not be open on 5th September, we are aiming to produce Free-Flow in time for the District Scouters' Meeting on 4th September.  Therefore, copy date will be Thursday 29th August.

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.  But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."    -----   Mother Teresa

Copy date for the September issue is Thursday 29th August.
